小室かな料紙工房 - Japanese paper studio --

茨城県常陸太田市（旧里美村）にある紙工房を訪れました。

I had a chance to visit a studio of Japanese paper called Kana Ryoushi owned by a craftsman Mr. Komuro in Hitachiota, Ibaraki.

かな料紙とは（小室かな料紙ウェブサイトより）書道のかな文字を書くための用紙をかな料紙といいます。

平安時代の後半（11～12世紀）、日本独自のかな文字が発達しました。この期間に多くの「古筆」と呼ばれる古典が残されています。「古筆」は装飾された和紙に美しいかな文字で書かれています。この装飾された和紙をお手本としてかな料紙は作られています。

小室さんによって再現されたかな料紙は、模様、色、質感すべてにおいて丁寧に丁寧に時間をかけて作られたとても美しいものでした。

According to Mr. Komuro's website, Kana Ryoushi is a paper made for calligraphy and is especially suited for Kana characters. The use of Kana characters was developed in late Heian era between 11 and 12th century in Japan. During this period, many classics, called Kohitsu, were published. They were made of beautifully decorated handmade papers. Now Mr. Komuro reproduces those papers while referencing the classics, as shown in the pictures below.

かな料紙の加工法はさまざまで染色、版、また継紙と呼ばれる数枚の紙をレイヤー状にして型をとり模様として使用するコラージュのような方法もあります。

There are several processing methods of Kana paper including dyeing, printing and collage with layered cut papers as below.

細部に渡って丁寧にカットされ形が作られていきます。

カットされた紙を重ねて模様となっていきます。まるで十二単のよう。

手彫りの版も拝見させていただきました。
Here are some hand engraved plates for printing. They are incredibly detailed and beautiful.

版はすべて手彫りとのこと、、圧巻の一言です。

箔装飾紙には金銀の箔が使用されます。箔は下のような薄い紙に包まれて保存されています。その後小室さんによって竹のナイフで細かく裁断された箔は木箱の中へ。

Pieces of gold and silver leaves are used for decoration. They are cut in pieces by a knife made of bamboo and stored in the wooden boxes. 

 

 

金銀箔を使用して作られたかな料紙。この上に文字を載せてしまうのがもったいないくらい。

きちんと整頓された道具たち。工房の中は清く美しいものでいっぱいでした。

All tools are neatly set in the studio. The work of the craftsman was amazing, and so impressive.
